A 12-point proposal on animal rights: 10-15 years imprisonment and fines

Prof. Ahmet Erol made a 12-point proposal on animal rights and animal protection. Erol said, “Actions that lead to the death of animals through violence and torture should be sentenced to 10-15 years in prison and fines, and abandonment of pets should be punished with heavy fines and 1-5 years in prison.”

The book titled “Animals and Law”, which includes the writings of 25 academics, has been published. Prof. Ahmet Erol, one of the 25 academicians, included 12 articles on animal rights and animal protection in the book. Prof. Ahmet Erol, Dean of Beykent University Faculty of Law, said, “Actions that lead to the death of animals through violence and torture should be punished with imprisonment and fines between 10-15 years, and abandonment of pets should be punished with heavy fines and imprisonment between 1-5 years.”

“THE PURCHASE OF PETS SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO TAX”

Stating that the acquisition of animals from the streets and shelters should be supported, Erol said, “Pet imports should be under strict control and the purchase of pets should be taxed. A provision should be included in the Municipality Law to collect a pet tax (between 100-500 TL) from pet owners once a year for each animal fed. A provision on animal tax between 5-10 percent of the real estate tax should be added.”

Erol said, “In apartment buildings with more than ten apartments, there should be an obligation to take care of one stray cat and dog for every 10 apartments.” Erol said, “An animal registry should be established and there should be compulsory and free services to be provided by municipalities.”
