Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Şerif Barış has issued an important warning, emphasizing the significance of earthquake preparedness. Barış highlighted the need for citizens to always be ready for a possible earthquake.
Speaking on the Bilim Gündemi (Science Agenda) program, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Şerif Barış answered Saygı Ünlü’s questions and provided critical insights into earthquakes.
EARTHQUAKE SWARMS IN SANTORINI ARE NORMAL
Drawing attention to the recent earthquake swarms in the Santorini region, Barış explained that seismic activity in the area does not necessarily indicate a major earthquake. “Santorini is a geologically active region, and such earthquake swarms are common. However, this does not mean that a large earthquake is inevitable,” he stated.
CRUCIAL CALCULATIONS FOR THE MARMARA EARTHQUAKE
Regarding the anticipated major earthquake in the Marmara Region, Barış shared probability calculations based on scientific data. He emphasized the need to closely monitor seismic activity in the area. According to the calculations, there is a 60% to 70% probability of a major earthquake occurring in Marmara within the next 30 years. He particularly highlighted the critical importance of the North Anatolian Fault segment passing through the Sea of Marmara, urging authorities to enhance precautionary measures.
92,000 BUILDINGS AT RISK
Addressing the earthquake risk in Istanbul, Prof. Dr. Barış warned that 92,000 buildings could suffer severe damage in the event of a major earthquake. “It is highly unlikely that these buildings can withstand a large earthquake. Urban transformation and structural reinforcement efforts must be completed as soon as possible,” he stated. Barış also urged residents living in older and structurally weak buildings to take necessary precautions.
“WE MUST BE PREPARED FOR EARTHQUAKES”
Emphasizing the importance of both individual and collective preparedness, Barış advised:
“Every family should have an emergency plan, determine evacuation routes, and keep an emergency kit ready. The importance of living in earthquake-resistant buildings should be prioritized, and necessary inspections must be conducted rigorously.”
